My journey to stop shampooing, Update: 1

September 22, 2011

My journey began on 07.07.11….

August 31 was my last day of the month without any hair products.  I could have gone back to the Baking Soda/Vinegar combo whenever needed for September.  I ‘washed’ my hair for the first time since July on September 2, 2011.  I decided to get some hair feathers to celebrate my completion of this hair detox process.

I really recommend trying this- See the Stop Shampooing Process

Last Day of my month of no hair Products (including no Baking soda/apple cider vinegar).
YES, that is a Banana Clip in my hair!

I was super excited to not need traditional hair products again.  My hair has always been a frizzy mess.  Sadly, my hair is still out of control and frizzy.  I did the ‘shampoo/conditioner’ treatment on September 2, 2011 and I only used water since then, but my hair is still frizzy.  Today, (September 22, 2011) I couldn’t stand it anymore.  I used the baking soda and apple cider vinegar, but I also used oil in my wet hair.  My plan is to try jojoba oil, but I think I will need to purchase it online.  I haven’t found it anywhere local.  I got some Herbal Oil, and tried it today.  Fingers crossed.  I do plan on continuing with the baking soda and vinegar.

My journey to stop shampooing, Log: Days 57- 59; The End

September 1, 2011

My journey began on 07.07.11….

August 31 was my last day of the month without any hair products.  Today (09.01.11) is the first  day I could have gone back to the Baking Soda/Vinegar combo, but I didn’t bother.  So this was a success.

I really recommend trying this- See the Stop Shampooing Process

In the almost two months that I gave up shampoo, conditioner and styling products, not one person commented on my hair one way or the other.  No one noticed anything at all different.  I had maybe 3 days of oily hair near the roots, then everything evened out.

My hair is healthy and shiny I still have some frizz issues in high humidity, but that has always been an issue for my hair type.  The bottom line is I hope that I am finished with shampoo/conditioner/styling products forever, but who knows?  I am planning to revisit this topic from time to time, so I guess we’ll see if I’ve fallen off the no hair product wagon.

My journey to stop shampooing, Log: Days 45-56

August 31, 2011

August 1, 2011 began the no shampoo/conditioner treatment.  I will be spending the month of August just using water to clean my hair*

I haven’t taken photos everyday because, I have really fallen into the habit of the no shampoo thing.

*Excerpt from Stop Shampooing Process:  Your hair may get greasy for awhile, but don’t panic.  This will pass.  Shampoo dries the hair and strips it of natural oil, so your body produces more oil to compensate. It can take up to a month of no shampoo, for your scalp to produce a normal amount of oil.

I haven’t had a really greasy feeling/looking day  this round, so hopefully those days are behind me.

Day 33, 08.09.11 is the first day where I felt my hair was greasy.  It seemed better on Day 34 and has bounced back and forth between looking normal and too greasy.

Looking at these images all lined up, I can really see the diminishing frizz, at least in the areas closest to my scalp.
Maybe this is working and September will begin a time of being completely free of commercial hair products! :-D

My journey to stop shampooing, Log: Days 13-19

July 29, 2011

Some images missing, my iPhoto album accidentally got deleted ;(

Day 13 (7.20.11)

Frizz level low
No shampoo

Day 14 (7.21.11)

My hair dries so much faster now and skipping the product step saves time and energy

Day 15 (7.22.11)

Temps reaching the 100’s
Frizz level low
No shampoo

It’s been two weeks without traditional shampoo and conditioner, but I have only used the baking soda/vinegar 6 times.  I’m going to use the baking soda/vinegar a few more times before I switch to just water for a month.  I really want to make sure all of old product residue is completely gone.

Temps reaching the 100’s

Baking soda/apple cider vinegar mixture
7th treatment

My journey to stop shampooing, Log: Days 5-12

July 20, 2011

Day 5 (7.12.11)

Temps in the high 90’s.  Very hot and very humid
Frizz level high Didn’t “shampoo” today

Day 6 (7.13.11)

Temps in the high 90’s.  Very hot and very humid
Frizz level medium
Didn’t “shampoo” today-hoping to cut back on all the frizz

Day 7 (7.14.11)

Temps in the high 80’s
Frizz level medium
Used only a small amount of the baking soda mixture

One week down. I wonder if I should extend the baking soda/vinegar treatment until I reach 14 shampoos with the baking soda, or if I should just stop shampooing after 14 calendar days…

Day 8 (7.15.11)

Temps in the 80’s
Frizz level medium
No shampoo today

Day 9 (7.16.11)

Temps in the high 80’s
Frizz level low
No shampoo

Day 10. (7.17.11)

Temps in the 90’s
Frizz level medium
Small amount of baking soda mixture

Day 11 (7.18.11)

Temps in the 90’s
Frizz level low
No shampoo

Day 12 (7.19.11)

Temps in the 90’s
Frizz level low
No shampoo

I think I’ve been doing well with Baking soda every 3rd day, so I think I will wait until I’ve used the baking soda/vinegar combo a few more times before I switch to all water.  I want to make sure I’m starting with product free hair.

So far I’ve only used the Baking Soda & Vinegar 5 times.  I think I will wait until I have 10-15 ‘treatments’ before I go to all water.

My journey to stop shampooing, Log: Days 1-4

July 12, 2011

Day 1 (7.8.11)

Today is my first try with the Baking Soda & Vinegar mixture!

It was a bit weird not having lather and It’s hard to tell how much Baking Soda to use, but so far so good.
My hair rinsed so much cleaner with the baking soda.  My curly thick hair always seemed to hold on to shampoo, but the baking soda rinsed right out.

The vinegar was also good.  I used a squirt bottle and sprayed it in.  I combed through my hair, then rinsed.  My hair seems so much lighter today without the heavy conditioner weighing it down.

My hair seems to be air drying quicker and is super soft.

Today is humid and I think I will have a lot of Frizz as the day wears on, but so far, so good.
I was a bit worried about smelling like vinegar all day, but I asked several people to smell my hair (without telling them why 😉 I have great friends, no one thought it was a strange request).  No one mentioned a vinegar smell.

Frizz Level– high
Very humid, tinder storms. Temps in the 90’s
Day 2 (7.9.11)

Frizz Level
– medium
Temps in the 90’s, no rain
Used less baking soda paste to possibly help with frizz

Hair feels lighter and bouncier.  It air dries quicker.

Day 3  (7.10.11)

Frizz Level– low

I didn’t “shampoo” today, I generally like to clean my hair about every other day.
Temps in the 90’s, no rain

Day 4 (7/11/11)

Frizz Level– high
Temps in the 90’s hot and humid
Hair is definitely drying faster
