Today’s Spirit Animal and Asana: Praying Mantis

The Praying Mantis by Ogden Nash

From whence arrived the praying mantis?
From outer space, or lost Atlantis?
glimpse the grin, green metal mug
at masks the pseudo-saintly bug,
Orthopterous, also carnivorous,
And faintly whisper, Lord deliver us.

My husband and I have been trying to have an Outdoor Movie night all summer.  Between busy friends and rain, we finally had our chance last Saturday, September 10, 2011.  We decided to screen two Muppet Movies.  It was to be an old school double feature.  We decided to watch The Muppet Movie, (1979) my favorite of the Muppet Movies.  Our Second feature was to be my husband’s favorite, The Great Muppet Caper (1981).


We watched both movies…note to self: Schedule next outdoor movie night closer to a New Moon instead of near a Full Moon.

Other than the bright moonlight, everything went well.  We even had people stick around to help us dismantle everything.

Being a photographer, I used a background and stands for the screen.

As we began breaking down the backdrop, we noticed a Praying Mantis.  He did not want to leave our screen.  We put the stands down, carried the cloth and he still hung on.  Finally, I had to move our little friend so I could take the equipment into the house.

As spirit Animals, Praying Mantises are all about calm, quiet, stillness and are perfect symbols for meditation.  They show is to be patient with others as well as ourselves.  They channel female warrior energy. When a praying mantis appears in your life it is asking you to direct your energy, thoughts or actions in a different way. “Follow Mantis” means putting that core aspect of yourself, your foundation of Spirit, at the helm and let it direct your intellect and ultimately your life.

Now on to the asana:  Praying Mantis
Praying Mantis is a balancing squat that helps open hips.

  • Begin in Table Pose
  • Curl toes under and begin to walk hands back towards your knees
  • Roll back onto your feet and allow your knees to come up off of the floor
  • Inhale your arms up, overhead
  • Interlace your fingers, index fingers up
  • Exhale, keeping your arms straight, lower your arms and lean torso forward
  • Point your fingers to the floor
  • Drishti is at your fingers
  • Hold for several breaths
  • Release to child’s pose for a few breaths

Open House….Open Mind (Part 3 of 3)

Continued from Open House…Open Mind:  part 2

My next visit was with Intuitive Healer, Lorraine (Kat) Morris .

I sat down.  The first thing Kat said to me was “What happened to you in Childhood?  Know that it is ok now.”

Un, yeah.  I started crying.  All my emotions are always directly on the surface, but this was silly.  I had been in the seat for all of 45 seconds.  She told me to confront my past and the people who contributed to me feeling unworthy and unwanted and like nothing I will ever do will be enough.


She told me to meditate on my Root Chakra so I feel more grounded: The Sanskrit name of the Root (Base) Chakra is Muladhara. It is our security center and is related to survival.  If your Root Chakra is out of balance it can cause weight issues and lower back pain and depression.  This chakra is related to family.  Unbalance in this area can cause foot pain and a tendency for low self esteem.
Without me giving her much info, it seem like she has me pegged.  I will definitely be working on bringing balance to my Root Chakra.

After my visit with Kat, I had a mini Emotion Code Session with Pam Frisco, CECP (Certified Emotion Code Practitioner).

I heard that Pam was amazing and she was booked solid all day.  This was my first encounter with the ‘Emotion Code.’  I had no idea what to expect.  Pam was friendly and comforting and helped my find my way.

She asked where I have been experiencing pain.  I replied my lower back.

In January, I had a herniated disc in my lower back.  I was in horrific pain.  I was out of work for almost a week.  I went to the chiropractor constantly and gradually I was able to walk upright again.  Now, 8 months later, I am still not recovered.  I can walk and accomplish my daily activities, but I still have pain and discomfort.  If I sit a little too long or stand a bit too long, if I walk a lot I experience a fair amount of discomfort.  The pain still keeps me from sleeping.  I haven’t been able to exercise this entire time, so of course the inactivity and boredom that comes with that has helped me to gain a lot of weight.

It’s hard to explain what and EC practitioner does.  She said a prayer, and then touched my hand.  She told me to say ‘my name is Jesi’ and then to say ‘my name is Fred.’
She seemed to ask herself questions and she flipped through a book.  She was then able to ‘release’ things that were troubling me.  She swiped a magnet over her head several times when she discovered the root of my problem.  She also discovered some neck pain…oh yeah, that.  I’ve had neck pain for about 20 years.

So here’s my rundown…

According to my subconscious these were all the things causing you to still have back pain:

Emotional Resonance of PANIC at age 37
Muscles of the Neck out of Balance = Re balanced
Muscles of the Back out of Balance = Re Balanced

Heartwall that began at 37

1) Panic 37
2) Panic 37
3) Panic 37 friend at work
4) Panic 37 new person at work
5) Panic 37 weight
6) Panic 37 friends
7) Taken for Granted 37
8) Taken for Granted 37

Pam said I would have two days of processing where everything comes to the surface.  I may feel panicky and my back may hurt.  Then, on the third day I would feel better.  My reading was on Sunday around 3:30PM.  Today is Wednesday, I do feel better.  My back is in minor pain, but nothing intolerable.  Will it last?  I guess time will tell.

Open House….Open Mind (Part 2 of 3)

Continued from Open House…Open Mind (Part 1 of 3)

One of the best parts of the Gilbertsville shops is Kaleidoscope Angels store.

This awesomely friendly shop is filled with interesting items.  I could spend hours in there and still not see everything.  Kaleidoscope Angels is a New Age retail store.  There are candles, oils, decorations, crystals, books, garden friends and so much more.  I can’t even tell you haw very friendly the staff is.  Every staff member had ‘Free Hugs’ on their name tags one boy had a ‘FREE HUGS’ shirt on and sure enough he came around the counter and enveloped me in a great bear hug.  Everything is reasonably priced and the hugs are free.

I strolled back to Thrive, and luckily I caught Barbara Kauffman between Tarot Card Readings.

She was doing mini readings for just $5. She was awesome.  She not only told my fortune but gave me a lesson on the cards too.  I am fascinated by Tarot Cards. In our short time together, with her natural teaching ability; she imparted enough knowledge that I can do a mini reading my self!

I believe my three cards were a DEVIL, maybe the KING OF CUPS (I’m not sure of my middle card.  it was male and he was seated.  I thought he had a young face) and a KNIGHT OF SWORDS.  The bottom line was that I had habits that I need to let go from my life.  She recommended a ‘ritual’ that she read about in Cristine’s Newsletter.

Open House….Open Mind (Part 1 of 3)

Sunday, September 11, 2011 there was an open house at the shops in Gilbertsville on the corner of Route 100 and Grosser road.

The newest addition to these great shops is Thrive Yoga and Health Consulting, owner Sue Greenwald.  I happen to be teaching at this lovely yoga studio Thursdays at 7:15PM and every other weekend.  Check out a class, your first one is free!


The open house had special venders and guest along with the normal shops.  I had a lot of readings done and I met a lot of great people!

The open house ran from 11am – 3 pm), I arrived around 11:30am to a full shopping center!

After taking a sweep through all the shops, I stopped to chat with author Susan Marie Kelly.  I picked up am Autographed Copy of her Memoir “Spirits in the Living Room.”
I haven’t had a chance to read this book, but look for a review coming soon.

Next I went upstairs to the third floor for “Messages from the Other Side” by Cristina Leeson, Psychic/Medium.  Normally, she practices on the second floor in her Inner Light Holistic Center storefront.  Cristina, known for her radio show at WPAZ; 1370AM (Tuesday evenings 7PM), was offering free messages from 12-1pm.
I hurried in and grabbed a seat.  The room was packed, standing room only.  Everyone was handed a number (mine was #1).  Cristina then pulled numbers from a bag, lottery style.  She asked that everyone have a question ready.

 


She pulled names and answered questions.  She was a fun and lively performer.  The whole time, however, I was stressing about what my question should be.  Most people asked financial and/or career questions.  I’m pretty content in that area of my life and I have a good marriage and am in mostly good health.  My anxiety grew, so that by the time my number was called, I blurted out “I DON’T HAVE A QUESTION!!!!”  This received some giggles from the crowd, but luckily, Cristina took it in stride and said she already had some answers.

I should stop for a moment and describe myself in general and at this event.  My day job is as a photographer (and graphic designer).  By night, I am a yoga teacher.  I was filling both rolls at this Open House.  I was dressed like a Yoga Teacher and I was representing THRIVE  with a name tag stating that, but I was also holding my Camera.  I was hoping to document this event and generate interest in the shops in general and Thrive in particular.  I only mention that incase it led to what Cristina said to me.

Ok, so it was my turn, Cristina described me as being a jack-of-all-trades, having more than one occupation, always running around and filling a lot of different roles (definitely true).  She said that this was ok.  I am supposed to do a variety of things. This is the path I am supposed to be on.  She then asked it I am always late (I am not.  I hate lateness and generally make it a priority to be on time.  I told her, ‘no, I’m an on time person.’  She then said, well are you always leaving at the last second, doing one more thing before you get out the door? (Absolutely.  This is me to a T).  She instructed me to ‘Stay Focused.’ There were Spirits to help and guide me.  She told me to look to Archangel MetatronMetatron is an angel of wisdom, song and prayer.  He helps us to find proper measure for all we do.  He assists us in finding balance.   He helps us know when ‘enough is enough.’  He helps us recognize when we need to do more for ourselves. I said Meditron sounds like a Transformer.  Everyone laughed and my turn was over.

Today’s Spirit Animal and Asana: Grasshopper

I’ve been encountering a lot of wild life lately.  It seems they have a message.

This Grasshopper actually landed on my arm and hung out there until I moved him to this plant.

Grasshoppers are Good Luck.  They symbolize abundance (perfect for the Autumnal Equinox).  Grasshoppers teach us to move forward and take chances, to act on a whim and jump in.  Grasshoppers give us bravery to listen to our internal voices.

In yoga, Grasshopper Posture, better known as Locust Pose or Shalabha-asana, teaches us to looking inward.  We open our hearts in back bends.  We learn compassion, to love and forgive.  Strengthening our backs helps us to stand tall in the assuredness that we have all the answers and we will eventually prosper.

How to perform Shalabha-asana (Locust or Grasshopper Pose):

  • Lay on your mat, belly down, arms at your sides
  • Inhale and lift your chest, neck, head and legs
  • Hold posture, and breathe
  • Relax your neck and bring your shoulders away from your ears
  • Open your Heart Chakra
  • Inhale and lift a bit higher
  • Drishti (eye gaze) is up, about where walls and ceilings generally meet
  • Lower back to your mat on an Exhale
  • After you complete Locust Pose, relax in Child’s Pose (Balasana)
